Tyler and Nicole make and deliver delicious, nutritious salads all around Sydney - known as The Living Lunchbox. They are also both Kundalini teachers who came from different walks of life and jobs to create this gorgeous business together as friends.
Tell the story of how you guys met?
Tyler: I first met nic a few years back.. maybe 3 years ago through a friend. Well we meet like ages ago but i cant remember that.. We both did the same yoga class for a while but didn't really hang out until last year.
Nicole: I remember the very first time I met Tyler. It was years ago.. mane 5 or 6 at a model casting. I was casting guys for a shoot. I just remember his energy and have never forgotten. Looking back there was a recognition at the time, but I had no idea that fast forward in the future we'd be such great friends and have a conscious food business together.
What inspired you to start the Living Lunchbox?
Tyler: I wanted to create the same concept in LA for years as there is such a lack of conscious food in this world. I am blessed with the knowledge to make health food. and its time to share that with the world. i came home from india in feb 2013 and had a chat to nic and she wanted to do the same thing so thats how it started. Its been so supported.
How do you come up with your salad ideas and smoothie ideas each week?
Tyler: Usually Nic and i sit down after work and just feel what would work for the next week and we bounce ideas off each other and come up with some awesome ideas.
Nicole: Often the smoothies and salads/dressing ideas are taken from some of our favourite recipes. We have a formula for salads and try to get as much variety of greens and veggies in there as possible. Then we mix up the toppings and the dressings week to week. We love a themed lunchbox from time to time and also doing collaborations with nutritionists and healthy foodies like LolaBerry from Melbourne and coming up in the New Year Loni Jane. These guys write the recipe and share their tips for a healthy lifestyle with our lunch lovers.
What are the future plans for The Living lunchbox? National? Store? Smoothie store?
Tyler...I see us being global. stores. smoothies shops. and lunch deliveries. The world needs our yummy food. And i feel its happening so quickly that in a few years id hope to see us on the moon.. hehe
You guys are both Kundalini Teachers as well, tell us about Kundalini Yoga for those who do not know?
Kundalini Yoga is called the Yoga of Awareness. It is a dynamic, powerful tool that is designed to give you an experience of your soul.
In Kundalini Yoga we harness the mental, physical, and nervous energies of the body and put them under the domain of the will, which is the instrument of the soul. This technology precisely and consciously combines breath, mudra, eye-focus, mantra, body locks, and postures to balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, expand lung capacity, and purifiy the blood. It brings balance to the body, mind, and soul.
Kundalini Yoga is a yoga for householders, for people who have to cope with the daily challenges and stresses of holding jobs, raising families, and managing businesses. It is a path for everyone who wants the skills to cope successfully with the challenges of our times.
Kundalini Yoga was kept very secret until 1969 when Yogi Bhajan taught it openly in order to prepare humanity for the major changes that this planet is going through as we cross from the Piscean to the Aquarian Age. The ancient technology of Kundalini Yoga gives us the awareness and the fortitude to make this a smooth transition. The legacy of technical and spiritual knowledge that Yogi Bhajan studied and mastered in India is the gift he brought to the West
What is the difference with other yoga practices?
Try it, you will find out.
How does the combination of Kundalini Yoga & Clean/high vibrational eating contribute to the other lifestyle decisions you make?
TYLER: CLARITY it gives your clarity so you can face your day with a clear head. What is going to come is going to come but its up to you if you want to do the work so you can be sharp and gracefully cut through anything that gets in front of you. Food goes hand in hand with this yogi lifestyle. My body wont let me eat anything that is not high vibrational living foods.
Nicole: It's constant practice to get it right, but they go hand in hand. It's a lifestyle choice to live my life at the highest possible frequency and to be as clean and clear as possible so that I can be my best self, living my life on purpose. Eating clean food, thinking clean thoughts. Just as we clean the body we need to consistently clean out our mind. Some kind of meditation or daily practice to give yourself a 'mental shower' as Yogi Bhajan called it, is essential. I know from experience when my practice drops off, that I start moving from a neutral meditative mind into a real negative mind space, but it doesn't take much to get back on track. And it's never too late to start.
You both have had some inspiring radical transformations/quitting jobs/going through illness / how does it all contribute to the daily conscious lifestyle choices you make?
Tyler: This journey is from darkness to light. Its a hard long journey but it is ever rewarding, everlasting. Everything in life happens for a reason, its a opportunity to grow and learn. In each moment in life it is riddled with clues and lessons to grow and act from compassion and love instead of reacting from fear and insecurity. When you get knocked down you can lay down for the rest of your life in that victim mind frame or you can get back up and use that pain and hurt to drive you to the truth which all lyes within us.
Nicole: I've left two jobs last year to really commit to this path which has brought with it a lot of fear and anxiety, but on the other side I know they were the best decisions I've ever made. Through my practice of KY I started to clear everything from my life that wasn't serving me. I feel like when I started this practice, I stopped being able to lie to myself. Being in a job I didn't love. Spending time with people that weren't vibrationally aligned, etc. It's like I got to the tipping point where I could no longer live with myself until I made a change. But life is constant tweaking and changing, always evolving and growing. Through my practice I can steer myself in the right direction and know i'll be in the right place at the right time. Like with Ty and I starting our business. It was like I created some space, then we were somehow put together with the same idea, and our Living Lunchbox was born! Destiny…. on track...
“It's easy to look at people who seem to have an amazing diet or lifestyle and think that its too hard to get there ”
Tell us about this amazing homemade nutella? Whats in it? What do you love eating it with?
Nicole: I got this recipe from beautiful Jen @ The Health Emporium in Bondi. They have machines that do fresh roasted nut butters.
This is her recipe. It's amazing. For my version I combine half hazelnut and half almond butter. But it's up to you!
Combine in a jar…
1 cup hazelnut butter
1/4 cup raw cacao powder
2 tbsp coconut oil
3 tbsp rice syrup
1/3 tsp vanilla powder or extract
1/4 tsp Himalayan sea salt
I love eating it with some fresh banana and strawberry on a rice cake… or truth be told, with a spoon straight out of the jar.
What are 5 practical steps people could try to lead a more conscious lifestyle? Eg. Try meditation/ yoga (be specific on what types), take 30 minutes time out for yourself eachday etc... Or if you believe in giving back to the community some how etc?
TYLER:
Just taking to time to read this is a start. When you start waking up it becomes more and more clearer and you will find that a lot of things that used to serve you will drop away... food, friends, habits... ect... Find a practice that best suits you in this moment. Some wont resonate with you others will, find the one that is perfect and stick to it. It will take time to make that transition over but it is worth the pain you will go through. TRUST ME.
Find time to be still with yourself and move inside, each and every day. Even if it's 5 minutes when you wake up. Get out of bed, light a candle and list ten things you are grateful for. Try and list some things that may be challenging you, that maybe at the time don't seem like gifts, but they are. Starting the day with an ATTITUDE of GRATITUDE changes everything.
Find friends that SUPPORT you and HONOUR you and your decisions to live a more conscious life. It helps to be surrounded by like minded people.
It's easy to look at people who seem to have an amazing diet or lifestyle and think that it's too hard to get there. Everyone started with small steps. That's all you need is one small step at a time in the right direction. Add one amazing new food, maybe a green juice to your day. and remove one not so great thing. Just make small steps that eventually create an everlasting change.
My daily essentials. Try to fit as much
into your day as possible (in no particular order)
Final messages of wisdom you love with either your own words or a favourite quote?
Tyler: This Planet was without you, and shall be without you, so when its with you....do not create chaos, do not create an egomaniac psyche through which you affect everybody without knowing what you're affecting. Be the light on your block holding space for Mother Earth. you should refuse to judge a person because they make decisions you do not agree with . . . judge the message, not the messenger. They have a completely different set of karmas which has led them to a completely different perspective. Their view is right for their karmic position . . . based in their sense of time. Let us be in the company of people of love so we maybe remember our purpose in their presence. May the wind of happiness always be behind you. and may you awaken planet earth to its dignity by your higher consciousness and grace. Sat Nam.
Nicole: We can experience our life through either love or fear. Fear isn't real it's an illusion. Only love is real and truth always prevails. We always have a choice.
"The most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or hostile universe." - Albert Einstein.I love this quote…from the beginning of my book (Marianne Williamson's The Law of Divine Compensation)
