On my own journey of trying to change out products in my life so that they were more natural and earth friendly, I found a beautiful resource in the natural-beauty world, Emmily Banks of Depths Of Beauty. Emmily is a make-up artist who uses all organic, natural and ethically made beauty & personal care products. She is also on a mission to help educate us on the why's, what's and how's. At some point between her clients and selling out natural beauty workshops around Australia she found some time to speak with us.

Tell us your journey into the clean beauty industry - did you start there or transition?

I’ve always felt inspired by beauty and extremely connected to health and wellness. My beauty career began in mainstream makeup artistry but as my knowledge and passion increased and my career grew I started to feel there was a huge disconnect. Contributing to the mindless consumption of toxic, mainstream products began to feel downright dirty and the deeper I dug into the beauty industry, the more disillusioned I became. My own personal transition to natural beauty was the first step and instantly I knew that this was something that needed to be shared! As I began to spread the word, first to friends and family and then slowly into my own work, I started to realise that I had an opportunity to make a profoundly positive impact on people, animals and the environment - the rest is history!

What are some of your favourite clean makeup products that you use personally everyday?

There are honestly so many awesome natural beauty products on the market that I’m find new favourites everyday. Some amazing products I currently have in high rotation both personally and professionally are:

The Beauty Chef ‘Beauty Fix Balm’

Edible Beauty Vanilla Silk Hydrating Lotion

Ere Perez Pure Rice Powder Bronzer

INIKA Certified Organic Liquid Mineral Foundation

Lily Lolo Natural Mascara

Karen Murrell Lipsticks

You work with some very inspirational people who try to live positive and clean in all aspects of their lifestyles, which then of course reaches to beauty & makeup, what are some of the areas other than beauty that you practice living consciously?

I try to be very conscious of my consumption. Whether it’s going on my body, in my body or is adding something to my home, I love to support locally made and sustainable products and produce wherever I can. It’s so easy to get swept up in mindless consumption but I feel there’s a huge element of self-love and love for the planet that comes from putting the extra effort into consuming consciously.

You also have a lot of inner beauty products that help you glow from the  inside out. What is your advice for people to get that glow and skin we all pine for? Starting from what we put IN our bodies?

Absolutely! There’s no doubt that beauty begins from the inside out. Nurturing and nourishing our body, mind and soul is so vital if we want to radiate our most beautiful selves. I’m big on fresh, organic whole foods, lots of green juice, bone broth, plenty of sleep, regular exercise and for an extra inner boost I’m a huge fan of The Beauty Chef GLOW Inner Beauty Powder

How do our thoughts also play a role in health & beauty?

I really do believe that our thoughts create our reality. Unfortunately I see so many beautiful girls having ugly thoughts about themselves. I’m not going to lie, we all have days when we don’t love what we see in the mirror but it’s those days especially that we really need to be the kindest to ourselves. I’m a huge advocate for self-love and positive affirmations. Feeling healthy and beautiful on the inside is what truly makes us radiate the kind of beauty that never fades.

If there were 5 tips for having a clean makeup kit - what would they be?

  1. Use less more often! You don’t need a million products in your cosmetics bag. Stick to a few good, clean basics and learn to multipurpose.

  2. Make it a priority to switch the products that have a high frequency of use or are covering the largest surface area of your skin first ie. moisturiser, foundation, deodorant, face wash.

  3. Download the Think Dirty App and start scanning your favourite mainstream products to get a breakdown of exactly what your skin is eating up!

  4. Shop at trusted stores. My two favourite online stores are Nourished Life

  5. Check out my blog  for all the best natural beauty info, advice, reviews, tips and tricks!

What is next for Depths Of Beauty?

There are so many exciting things evolving for Depths of Beauty! My biggest mission is to give millions of women (and men) the opportunity to love the skin they’re in by switching to natural, organic and ethically made, beauty and personal care products. In order to do this it’s all about CONNECTION, which is another aspect of my work I really love. Whether it’s face to face, through workshops and events or online books and courses, it’s all about creating connection, community and sharing knowledge through as many mediums as possible so we can spread this message far and wide.
